LYNDONVILLE, Vt. -- The Mitchell College women's volleyball team picked up its first wins of the season on Saturday afternoon at Stannard Gymnasium.
After dropping the first set against Northern Vermont-Johnson, Mitchell rallied back to win three straight sets to post a 3-1 victory. The Mariners then blanked Northern Vermont-Lyndon by a 3-0 final to complete the sweep, improving to 2-2 on the season.
Mitchell returns to action at Medgar Evers College on Tuesday, September 10 at 7 p.m.
Mitchell 3, NVU-Johnson 1
In the opening set, Johnson never trailed en route to a 25-17 final to claim the early advantage. The Mariners responded by eeking out the second set by a 25-23 tally, evening the match at a set apiece. The crucial third set featured 10 ties and nine lead changes as Mitchell once again held off Johnson down the stretch for a 25-22 win. The Mariners then sealed the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.
Bree Rudolph led the offense with eight kills while Brianna Ley added seven and Ariana Carter chipped in six. Ley also finished with a match-high 15 digs while Lexi Hubbard handed out 12 assists.
Mitchell 3, NVU-Lyndon 0
The Mariners breezed past Lyndon in the second match of the day, cruising to set victories of 25-5, 25-4 and 25-6. Mitchell's biggest run came in the opening set when Vanessa Gumbs served for 13 straight points, six of which came via the ace.
Mitchell served for a season-high 32 aces in the contest led by a match-high 13 from Rudolph. Laurissa Amaker paced the offense with a match-high six kills while Rudolph added three.
