
Volleyball falls 3-1 at Bay Path
HOLYOKE, Mass. - The Mitchell College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 conference decision at Bay Path College on Tuesday night.
Outside hitter Nadine Harkless led the Wildcats with a match-high .375 attack percentage and totaled 17 kills. Bay Path lost the first set 25-17 but did not look back after taking the second 25-8, finishing 25-21 and 25-20 to earn its third conference victory of the season.
The Mariners won the first game outhitting the Wildcats with a .147 team attack percentage with 11 kills. Senior Bianca Young led the Mariners with five kills in the first game, while junior Arianna Thomas patrolled the court with 11 digs. Young finished with six kills and seven digs, while Thomas led all players with 29 digs.
Despite a great first game performance, the Mariners fell apart in the second game and were unable to regain momentum until fourth. Defensively, Bay Path topped its opponent finishing with 75 digs to the Mariners' 68 for the night.
In the third set, both teams played point for point until 16-17 when the Wildcats pulled away by scoring seven straight points. Ashley Provost started the rally with a dump, and after Allie Esquivel scored the 18th point, Provost notched another kill for the 19th point.
Bay Path server Kacie Bayreuther nailed a service ace to make it 20-17. Kate Bartels attacked the next two points and finished the seven-point run to up the lead to 22-17. Bay Path clinched the third set after another kill by Provost and some Mitchell errors.
The final game was another tight game, flip-flopping point for point until 14-14. Bay Path again waged a rally, scoring the next six points to take a 20-14 advantage. Bartels, who set the ball rolling, also scored the final kill for the Wildcats.
Five Wildcats notched double figures in digs. Harkless garnered a double-double with 17 kills and 20 digs, as did Provost with 29 assists and 10 digs. She also finished four kills shy of a triple-double and added a .333 attack percentage. Vanessa Chaplin finished with 21 digs.
Freshman Emily Stracuzzi led the Mariners with 10 kills and added 14 digs with a .212 attack percentage. Sophomore Nicole Terni was the only other Mariner to notch a double-double with 22 assists and 12 digs.
Bay Path dropped to 0-8 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. Mitchell fell to 5-5 overall and 0-3 in NECC play.
Mitchell will next host Newbury College on Thursday, October 13 at 6 p.m.
