Volleyball Falls 3-0 at Regis
WESTON, Mass. – Regis College rallied behind a team effort in a 3-0 victory (25-10, 25-14, 25-16) over Mitchell College Wednesday night in a non-conference women's collegiate volleyball match at Higgins Court.
Ahnasia Mckinney and Valerie Whalen each finished with six kills in 11 attack attempts, with Kamdyn Tenorio contributing five kills, three service aces and a team-high 10 digs. Karly Sanborn dished out 13 assists to go along with three kills and six digs, and Mica van der Meulen added eight digs and three service aces to the winning effort.
With Tenorio serving early in the first set, Regis rattled off 11 unanswered points to open a 17-5 advantage, capped by consecutive service aces from Tenorio. The Pride maintained the double-digit lead the rest of the set, closing it out on a kill by Kate Montigny.
Mitchell won the first three points of the second set, but Regis went on an 8-2 run to pull ahead, 8-5, before the Mariners scored the next three points to tie the set at 8-8. The Pride put together a 9-1 scoring run to take control, and then they scored six of the final seven points to win the set, including service aces from van der Meulen and Luinet Melendez.
The Pride scored six of the first seven points of the third set and eventually extended the lead to as many as eight points. Mitchell closed to within five on consecutive service aces by Brianna McDermott, but Regis finished off the match with a 6-2 scoring run, capped by kills from Montigny, Jordan Sterenberg and Mckinney.
Sophie Arseneau led Mitchell with four kills and chipped in three block assists, while setter Claire Binfield finished with 13 assists and six digs. Defensively, Jade Cain led the way with four total blocks, and Megan Pardee and Bree Rudolph collected seven digs apiece.
Mitchell (2-4 overall) will head to Cobleskill, N.Y., for a tri-match on Saturday, September 18. The Mariners face Keuka College at 2 p.m. and host SUNY Cobleskill at 4 p.m.
