
Volleyball Falls 3-0 at Conn
NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Mitchell College women's volleyball team fell in three sets on Tuesday night against Connecticut College at Luce Fieldhouse in New London.
The Camels won by set scores of 25-21, 25-17, and 25-21. Katherine Randall led Conn with 10 kills, while Taylor Knot was credited with seven kills.
Olivia DeLoach paced the Mariners with a double-double of 13 kills and 15 digs, both team-highs. Allison Blum matched DeLoach with 15 digs and Molly Steel-Miller registered five kills. Senior Claire Binfield dished out 24 assists, marking the ninth game this season in which the setter has tallied 20 or more assists. Freshman libero Julia Lent added 14 digs for the visiting squad.
Conn controlled the first set early and often, leading 18-10 down the stretch. Mitchell got hot, however, scoring five of the next seven points behind three DeLoach kills. The Mariners kept up the attack, soon trimming the deficit to thee, before the Camels pulled away, icing the set on a Mitchell service error.
Connecticut College did not trail in the second set, maintaining a steady lead throughout. Ciera Moore notched a kill late which made the score 21-16, but the Camels reeled off three straight points to steady the ship, sealing the set on a kill by Christina Leduc.
The Mariners persevered and would not go quietly, trailing the Camels 12-11 midway through the third set. Five consecutive Conn points jolted the home team ahead, but Mitchell dug deep and scored five straight of their own, with Steel-Miller ripping off a key kill.
The Camels then scored three straight, followed by three in a row from the Mariners, and then each team traded one more point. Connecticut College followed by taking advantage of two Mitchell errors to go ahead by four, and Katherine Randall picked up a kill to end the night.
The loss snapped the Mariners (8-6 overall) two game winning streak, and Mitchell will look to bounce back on Wednesday, October 5th, against another NESCAC opponent in Trinity at 7:00pm. The Camels (6-6) play next at Middlebury College on Friday, October 7 at 7:00pm.
