
Men’s Lacrosse Falls in Season Finale
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team closed out their season on Thursday afternoon, losing 10-7 to La Roche University in non-conference action at Alumni Field.
Senior Keeano Gonzalez (New London, Conn.) scored a team-high four goals and added one assist for the Mariners, while also scooping a career-high 22 ground balls, 16 of them coming off face offs. In the process, Gonzalez set the new program record for ground balls in a career with 261, surpassing Kyle Marsh, who collected 253 ground balls between 2016-2019.
Fellow senior Jon Parra-Tobey (New London, Conn.) added a pair of goals for the Mariners, and freshman Nathan Mahoney (Stonington, Conn.) scored once.
The Mariners opened the game with goals by Gonzalez and Parra-Tobey to take a 2-0 lead into the second quarter. Back to back goals by Gonzalez opened up the second frame, but two goals by Redhawks made it a 4-2 game at intermission.
Nolan Lynam scored two quick goals to open the third, allowing La Roche to tie the game, before Parra-Tobey and Mahoney answered with goals of their own, pushing the Mariners back ahead by two. The Redhawks countered with four unanswered goals, until Gonzalez netted his fourth goal of the game with 7:13 remaining. The visiting squad tacked on two insurance goals down the stretch and held on for their first win of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Cameron Haefs (Cary, Ill.) made 17 saves for the Mariners.
Lynam found the back of the net seven times for the Redhawks and assisted on another goal. Connor Radecki logged all 60 minutes between the pipes and turned away 23 shots.
La Roche narrowly outshot Mitchell (50-48) and won the turnover battle (32-22), but the Mariners controlled the face-off, taking 16-19.
The Mariners conclude their season with an 0-6 record, including an 0-5 mark in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.
