Men's LAX Repeats as NECC Champs
NASHUA, N.H. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team defeated Daniel Webster College by a 14-2 final on Saturday afternoon to claim its second straight New England Collegiate Conference regular season title.
Mitchell improved to 7-4 overall and finished 3-0 in conference play. The NECC title is determined through regular season play, and for the second year in a row the Mariners went undefeated against their NECC counterparts (Daniel Webster, Becker and Regis). DWC dropped to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in NECC play.
Mitchell built leads of 4-0 after one period and 6-0 at the break and pulled away with a four-goal third quarter before DWC's Jay McGrath finally put the hosts on the board with 1:39 remaining in the stanza. Mitchell added four straight in the fourth before Anthony Cotoni closed the scoring off a Sean Hamilton pass with 90 seconds remaining for the 14-2 final.
Senior Shane Sullivan led the Mariners with a hat trick while classmates David Klapp and Demetre Lyras and sophomore Aaron Sladyk registered two goals and an assist apiece. Lyras led all Mariners with nine ground balls while Klapp picked up six.
Freshman goalie JD LeMay earned the win with seven saves and yielded to Jordan Cook late, who added two stops. James Bushey posted 22 saves for the Eagles over nearly 57 minutes before Curtis Larade came in for the final three minutes of relief.
Mitchell will next visit River College on Tuesday, April 15 at 7:00 p.m.
