LAX Shuts Out Rivier, Grillo Reaches 100-Point Club

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team ended its regular season with a 19-0 victory over Rivier College on Wednesday afternoon.
Mitchell netted 17 goals in the first half and coasted to the win. Junior Adam Grillo led the way with seven goals and two assists in the contest and became the first player in school history to record 100 career points. Freshman Shane Sullivan chipped in with four goals and three assists while classmates Demetre Lyras and Erik Vasquez each added hat tricks.
The Mariners (9-3 overall) ended the regular season with a school record for wins. Mitchell also set single season benchmarks for team goals (132), team assists (67) and scoring defense (7.15 goals per game).
Mitchell outshot Rivier (0-10 overall) by a 59-15 margin and held a 63-24 edge in ground balls. Raiders' goalie Chris Benoit finished with 17 saves in the loss. Danny Hooper led Rivier with five ground balls.
Grillo reached the 100-point mark with his first goal just 65 seconds into the contest. He netted six markers in the first half and added the final one in the fourth quarter. He finished the year with 41 goals and 13 assists for 54 points, breaking the single season school records for both goals and points.
Freshman goalie Peter Eshenfelder made six saves to secure the first-ever shutout for the Mitchell program. Sullivan's three assists in the game also pushed him to the school's single season record (16).
Mitchell will now await word on whether it receives a bid to the 2011 ECAC New England Championship. The Mariners will learn if they are a part of the eight-team field on Monday, May 9.
