Men's LAX Wins NECC Opener vs. Daniel Webster
PAWCATUCK, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team outlasted Daniel Webster College on a snowy Saturday afternoon to pick up a 15-12 win in New England Collegiate Conference action at Stonington High School.
Jordan Cook netted four goals and added one assist while Dan DiGioia recorded three goals and four helpers to lead the Mariners (2-2 overall, 1-0 NECC). Anthony Cotoni and David Downie each finished with four goals and an assist to pace the Eagles (2-2 overall, 0-1 NECC).
Downie scored in the opening minute to put Daniel Webster on the scoreboard. The Mariners quickly matched behind DiGioia's first tally of the contest, and three minutes later Cook put Mitchell in front 2-1. The teams then traded goals over the final 6:49 of the quarter, with DiGioia putting the Mariners on top for good with his second of the stanza to make it 4-3.
Mitchell outscored Daniel Webster 4-1 in the second quarter to lead 8-4 at the half. Four different Mariners potted goals in the quarter—Cook, Tyler Kradas, Aaron Sladyk and Joshua Muckle—while Downie notched his hat trick before the break.
Mitchell took its biggest lead in the third quarter when back-to-back goals from Kradas and Evan Gennell made it a 12-6 game. However, the Eagles came storming back with four goals over the final 5:05 of the stanza, with Cotoni scoring with two seconds left on the clock to bring Daniel Webster to within two at 12-10.
The Mariners scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to pad the lead. Muckle's second goal of the day came with 5:03 remaining and gave Mitchell a 15-10 lead. The Eagles cut into the deficit behind scores by Cotoni and Storm Adams in the final 2:02 but could not close the gap.
Mitchell goalie JD LeMay remained unbeaten in league play and finished with four saves against 20 shots. DWC goalie Curtis Larade made 13 stops against 45 shots.
Muckle had a big day for the Mariners at the face-off spot (16-for-26) and scooped up a career-high 16 ground balls. Maximilian Crowley picked up seven ground balls and went 4-for-5 on face-offs. Brandyn Torrey finished with 10 ground balls to lead the Eagles.
Mitchell will next host Emerson College on Wednesday, March 25 at 4 p.m. Daniel Webster returns to action at Nichols College on Tuesday, March 24 at 4 p.m.
