LAX Holds on For 9-7 Win at Daniel Webster
NASHUA, N.H. – A fourth quarter rally pulled host Daniel Webster College within a goal of Mitchell College, but the Mariners posted two goals in the final five minutes to escape with a 9-7 victory over the Eagles in a men's lacrosse regional match-up Monday at Eagle Field.
DWC (3-8 overall) trailed 7-3 after Mitchell sophomore Demetre Lyras scored off a Jordan Cook setup with 8:37 remaining, but the Eagles would strike three times in the span of just 1:15. Rookie Dan Knupfer notched two strikes 35 seconds apart and then set up Chris Gordon with 6:22 remaining for a 7-6 game.
Senior Adam Grillo put Mitchell (5-6 overall) back ahead with an unassisted score with 4:26 to go, but DWC tightened things again as Justin Chiulli sent home a Nate Burr pass with 56 seconds left. DWC would win the ensuing faceoff but lose possession deep in Mitchell territory, allowing sophomore Shane Sullivan to take a long pass from classmate Tyler McDonald and score with 25 seconds left to ice it.
Sullivan would finish with five goals and an assist to lead the Mariners, who won their third straight and for the fourth time in their last five games. Cook and Joshua Muckle also scored goals while freshman Ben Carr added two assists and a team-high six ground balls.
Knupfer finished with three goals and two assists for Daniel Webster, while Eric Mulford and Kieran Kavanaugh added single goals. Chiulli would pull in a game-high six groundballs.
Tommy Driscoll finished with 11 saves for DWC, while Peter Eshenfelder had 11 stops for the Mariners.
Sullivan had scored twice to open things up in the first quarter and Knupfer added his first for a 2-1 game after one. Mulford would tie it with 5:09 to go in the second and Kavanaugh put the hosts ahead 3-2 48 seconds later. But Cook would finish off a Sullivan pass with 54 seconds to go, and Muckle beat the clock with one second remaining to put Mitchell up 4-3 at the half.
Sullivan would pot two goals in the third for a 6-3 game after three.
Mitchell finished with advantages in shots on goal (20-18), groundballs (27-24), and clears (19-9) while the Eagles won the battle on face-offs (11-7). The teams combined for 19 penalties.
Mitchell will wrap up the regular season with a home game against Nichols College on Tuesday, April 24 at 4:30 p.m.
