LAX Earns First Win of the Season at Becker
LEICESTER, Mass. – Mitchell College scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter en route to its first win of the season, 14-9, at Becker College on Tuesday afternoon in men's lacrosse action.
In the first quarter Mitchell (1-4 overall) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead. Senior Adam Grillo got the Mariners on the board just 30 seconds into the game on an unassisted goal. After sophomore Demetre Lyras put Mitchell up 2-0, classmate Shane Sullivan tallied back-to-back goals to put Becker (0-5 overall) in an early 4-0 hole.
The Hawks got on the board with 8:07 remaining in the quarter on Joe Ignagni's fourth goal of the season. Jeff Petersen then cut the Mariners' lead in half with an unassisted goal with 6:45 left in the first stanza.
The Mariners increased their lead to 5-2 when sophomore Aaron Feinberg fed an open Lyras in front of the Hawks net for his second goal of the game. Mitchell later widened the lead to 6-2 just 15 seconds into the second quarter on a Chris Joy goal.
After the teams exchanged goals in the 19th minute, the Hawks got back-to-back scores from Ignagni and John DeAngelis to cut the deficit to 7-5. Grillo gave Mitchell some breathing room with a goal just before halftime, and the Mariners took an 8-5 lead into the break.
Both teams exchanged scores to open the second half, but Becker made a charge when Jeff Petersen scored consecutive goals to cut the margin to 9-8 after three quarters. Mitchell responded by outscoring Becker 5-0 in the fourth quarter, with two goals coming off the stick of Lyras.
Grillo, Sullivan and Lyras each scored four goals on the day as the Mariners enjoyed their best offensive game of the season. Sophomore goalie Peter Eshenfelder made 15 saves on the afternoon.
Mitchell returns to action in its home opener against Mount Saint Vincent College on Thursday, March 22 at 4 p.m.
