MLAX Falls on The Road at Manhattanville
PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team fell 26-4 in a non-conference game against Manhattanville College on Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.
12 different players scored for the Valiants, who led wire to wire to earn their third victory of the season. James Weinbaum and Nick Cornelia netted four goals each to pace the Manhattanville offense, while Tyler Berch and Jesse McGrath potted two goals apiece. Weinbaum added a team-best five assists and Nick Padovani was credited with a game-high 19 ground balls.
The Valiants scored their first goal 35 seconds into the match and never looked back, building a 10-0 advantage by the end of the first quarter. The Mariners finally got on the board early in the second frame when junior Dylan Kinsella (Waterbury, Conn.) potted his second goal of the spring, unassisted, at the 12:15 mark. Unfortently for the Mariners, Manhattanville would go on to rip off six unanswered goals to carry a 16-1 lead into the break.
The home team opened up the third quarter with two quick strikes before Xavier Haney (Montville, Conn.) scored off an assist by Weston Schumacher (Sherborn, Mass.) to make it 18-2 with 11:17 to go in the stanza. Again, the Valiants responded, this time by closing the third with five straight goals.
The Mariners received two more goals on the afternoon, as Jon Parra-Tobey (New London, Conn.) made it 24-3 midway through the fourth and Schumacher notched his ninth score of the season in the waning moments of the game. Schumacher added six ground balls while Keeano Gonzolez (New London, Conn.) scooped a team-high seven ground balls while going 11-31 at the face off position.
Manhattanville outshot the Mariners 56-18, forced 32 Mitchell turnovers and won the ground ball battle 56-29. Senior Ethan Wheeler (Annapolis, M.D.) played all 60 minutes in the cage and made 11 saves. At the midfield, the Mariners converted 15-30 clears.
Joe Ulzheimer, Cody Johnston, Mike Hopkins, and Elijah Bell split time in net for the Valiants, making seven combined saves.
The Mariners (0-9 overall) return to action on Tuesday, April 4, when they face Johnson & Wales University in a non-conference road clash.
