Men's LAX Edged 11-9 at JWU
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team came up on the short end of an 11-9 final at Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday night in a non-conference showdown at SMAC Turf Field.
Jade Shields led all scorers with five goals, but it wasn't enough to overcome a balanced JWU scoring attack. Although goalie Marcel Quinlan turned away a season-high 21 shots, the Wildcats had seven players net a goal in the contest, led by four from Chris Calisto.
Ryan Foster put the Mariners on top 1-0 early, the first of two goals on the night for the rookie. However, his goal was Mitchell's only one of the opening quarter, and by the start of the second period the hosts held a 3-1 advantage.
Shields cut the deficit in half with a man-up tally from Ethan LePain to start the second quarter. He later notched the final goal of the half--this time from Jadyn Gonzalez--as the Mariners trailed 5-3 at intermission.
Mitchell twice pulled within one in the third quarter, the first time following a goal by James Giovanniello, and again after a goal by Shields with 4:26 to play in the period. Johnson & Wales responded with a pair of scores in the final 3:53 of the stanza to lead 9-6 heading to the fourth.
The Mariners outscored the Wildcats 3-2 in the final period but couldn't close the gap. Joe Schley and Foster each scored on unassisted efforts while LePain fed Shields for the game's final goal.
JWU held a 50-27 edge in total shots and forced 36 Mitchell turnovers.
Mitchell (2-5 overall) will next play at Salem State University on Saturday, April 24 at 6 p.m.
