
LAX Tripped Up at USJ
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's lacrosse team downed the Mitchell College Mariners, 22-4, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at the USJ Lacrosse Field.
The Blue Jays picked up their first win of the season and recorded a school record for goals scored in the process. Mitchell, which got scores from Jade Shields, Jame Giovanniello, Henri Poehlman and Joe Schley, fell to 0-2 overall on the year.
USJ's Owen LaPorte came out guns blazing, scoring five goals in the second period alone, and tied the school record with nine goals in the game. Ryan Paltauf also notched a school record with 10 assists.
The Blue Jays (1-1 overall) led 3-1 after the first quarter but quickly picked up the pace, outscoring the Mariners 9-2 in the second period to take control. USJ which never trailed in the victory.
Trey McCann was solid in goal for the Blue Jays, making a series of impressive stick saves. He stopped nine of 12 shots, and picked up his first win (1-1) of 2021 in 38 minutes between the pipes. Sebastian Fusco also made an appearance, saving three of four shots in the final 21-plus minutes.
The Mariners relied on Marcel Quinlan who played nearly 52 minutes, recording 12 saves against 32 shots. He dropped to 0-2 on the season with the setback. Ethan Wheeler also saw action for Mitchell and made one stop.
The Mariners return to action at home against Suffolk County CC on Sunday, March 14 at 1 p.m.
