LAX Holds Down SUNYIT, Wins 7-3

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team came away with a 7-3 victory over SUNYIT on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Field.
The Mariners (5-4 overall) outscored the Wildcats (0-8 overall) 6-1 in the first half and got a strong performance from freshman goalie JD LeMay the entire game. The rookie net minder recorded 15 saves and allowed a season-low three goals in 60 minutes of action.
Senior Shane Sullivan sparked the Mitchell offense with three goals and an assist to notch his first hat trick of the season. Sophomore Dan DiGioia and junior Tyler Kradas finished with a goal and assist apiece while senior Demetre Lyras and junior Jordan Cook each added scores.
Tyler Serva, Nicholas Levanti and Jon Eguren all recorded goals for SUNYIT on the day. Jeffrey Melnik finished with 11 saves in goal.
The Wildcats went up 1-0 in the first quarter when Levanti scored on an unassisted effort with 8:05 remaining in the stanza. The lead would be short lived, however, as just over two minutes later Sullivan tied the game with his first tally. Lyras put the Mariners ahead at the 4:05 mark with a bounce shot from 12 yards out, and Sullivan capped the first quarter scoring with a goal off a feed from DiGioia with 2:47 to go.
Mitchell scored three goals in the second quarter to extend the lead to five. Sullivan finished off the hat trick with an assist from Kradas with 6:41 remaining, and DiGioia and Cook added scores in the final 2:04 to put the Mariners on top 6-1 at the break.
After a scoreless third quarter, SUNYIT cut into the deficit midway through the fourth when Eguren finished off a pass from Shane Joswick. The Mariners got it back quickly, though, as Kradas scored on an unassisted effort on the break to make it a 7-2 game. Serva netted the Wildcats' final goal with 6:48 to play off an assist from Adam Reynolds, though SUNYIT certainly tested LeMay over the final minutes.
LeMay made 10 of his 15 saves in the second half and was a major reason why the Wildcats went 0-for-8 with a man advantage. SUNYIT held a 39-27 advantage in shots and forced 21 Mitchell turnovers, but LeMay picked the Mariners up with his steady play in the crease.
Mitchell will next play at Albertus Magnus College on Thursday, April 10 at 4 p.m. SUNYIT returns to action at Cazenovia College on Wednesday, April 9 at 4 p.m.
