
Women’s Lacrosse Falls Short in Showdown with AMCATS
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team found themselves in an early 5-0 hole against Anna Maria College on Wednesday afternoon and were unable to claw their way back, falling by a final of 15-5 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tilt at Alumni Field.
The AMCATS opened with five unanswered goals in the first quarter, before sophomore Chloe Jennings (New London, Conn.) put the Mariners on the board with her first goal of the day 11 seconds into the second stanza. Anna Maria responded with two more goals to push their lead to 7-1, until Jennings potted her second goal with 9:04 left before halftime. The AMCATS closed the half with two more goals and led 9-2 at the intermission.
Chloe Jennings began the second half by firing home her third goal of the day for a hat trick, but a pair of Anna Maria goal followed, giving the visitors an 11-3 edge. Junior Lauren Cordero (Selden, N.Y.) then found the back of the net with 6:11 left in the third, while senior Angelia Rheaume (East Lyme, Conn.) scored the game's next goal with 12:14 remaining in the fourth, cutting the deficit to six, 11-5. Unfortunately for the Mariners, Anna Maria closed the game with four straight goals, securing their second victory of the season.
Jennings added nine draw controls, five ground balls and five caused turnovers, while Cordero scooped five ground balls, won a pair of draw controls, and caused one turnover. Junior Arrianna Stark (Scotia-Glenville, N.Y.) made 15 saves for the Mariners.
Olivia Stump paced the AMCATS offensive attack with four goals and three assists. Grace Holden logged all 60 minutes in cage, picking up the win by turning away nine shots.
Anna Maria outshot the Mariners 41-18, were 20-30 in clear attempts, and forced 38 Mitchell turnovers. The Mariners converted 10-126 clear attempts but held the upper hand in draw controls (14-9).
The Mariners (1-10, 1-8 GNAC) will play their final home game of the season on Friday, April 18, against Elms College with the opening draw scheduled for 4:00 pm. This will also serve as Senior Day. The AMCATS (2-12, 2-7 GNAC) host Simmons University in their next game on Saturday, April 19.
