WLAX Falls to Dean in Final Home Game of Season
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team came up short in their final home game of the season on Tuesday afternoon, losing 21-3 to Dean College in a non-conference tilt.
The Bulldogs scored the first 15 goals of the game and never trailed, improving to 8-8 overall while winning for the third time in their last four games. Maire Brown led Dean with four goals to go along with three assists. Natalie Peterson, Nina Medeiros, Haley Gaunt, and Allie Bezio each recorded hat tricks on the day. Peterson also had a game-high 10 draw controls, as Dean finished 18-28 from the middle.
Senior Daniella Holland (Nanuet, N.Y.) paced the Mariners with three goals, giving her a team-high 33 on the season. Junior Jessica Krupnikoff (Farmington, Conn.) scooped up four groundballs to lead Mitchell and also had a team-best five draw controls.
Dean jumped out to an early lead when Maire Brown potted her first goal just over a minute into the action. Natalie Peterson sent one past the Mitchell goalie less than a minute later, and the Bulldogs added three more goals in the ensuring minute to gain a 5-0 edge. By the time the first quarter came to an end, Dean held a 12-0 edge and they tacked on three more in the second frame before Daniella Holland scored for the first time in the game with 6:00 remaining until halftime.
The Bulldogs kicked off the second half with two quick goals before Holland notched her second goal with 11:20 on the clock. The senior finished off the day in the final minutes, giving her seven goals this spring in which she has logged or surpassed a hat trick.
Junior Hannah Gomes (Groton, Conn.) logged all 60 minutes in the cage for the Mariners and finished with 13 saves and a pair of ground balls.
Mitchell lost the turnover battle 21-13, but matched Dean with 22 ground balls, and went 11-16 on clear attempts.
Allie Stockwell played the whole game in goal for Dean and was credited with nine saves.
The Mariners (3-10 overall, 0-1 NECC) will close their season on Saturday, April 29, when they face New England College in the NECC championship.
