WLAX Falls in Battle of Mariners
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team dropped a 19-1 decision to Maine Maritime Academy on Monday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Field.
MMA's Madison Savary led all scorers with six points on a hat trick and three assists. Sydney Adams, Shelby O'Neil and Madison Barry each added four goals while Christina Wilson contributed a pair. The visiting Mariners held a commanding 32-6 edge in total shots in the contest.
Kate McCormack netted Mitchell's lone goal and also finished with all six of her team's draw controls. Francesca Pinard recorded an assist and a team-high five ground balls in the contest.
MMA got out to a quick start as Savary scored just 20 seconds into the game. A minute later she dished off to Barry for another goal, and O'Neil and Adams quickly followed suit to expand the lead to 4-0 after 6:39.
MMA led 6-0 before McCormack put Mitchell on the scoreboard with her team-leading 17th marker of the season. However, the visitors owned the rest of the half and built a 13-1 lead by intermission. O'Neil tallied all four of her goals in the first half to lead the charge.
Adams scored twice after the break as MMA added six goals over the final 30 minutes. Morgan Libby found the back of the net with 15:20 remaining to give the visiting Mariners seven different goal scorers on the day.
MMA goalie Sierra James made a pair of saves while Mitchell's Gillian MacLellan had 10.
Mitchell (2-4 overall) will next play at Albertus Magnus College on Thursday, April 12 at 6 p.m. Maine Maritime (3-4 overall) returns to action at Lyndon State College on Saturday, April 14 at noon.
