WLAX Races Past NVU-Lyndon for First Victory of Season
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team notched their first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, blowing past Northern Vermont University-Lyndon 15-2.
A total of five Mariners scored in the contest, with senior Daniella Holland (Nanuet, N.Y.) leading the way with six goals and one assist. Lauren Cordero (Selden, N.Y.) and Jessica Krupnikoff (Farmington, Conn.) both notched hat tricks for Mitchell, while Hannah Gomes (Groton, Conn.) scored a pair of goals and Mariah Travisano (Putnam, Conn.) netted her first of the season.
The win was also the first for head coach Ashley Snow, who is in her first season at the helm of the program.
The Mariners got off to a fast start and didn't look back, using three first quarter goals from Holland and one from Cordero to build a 4-1 advantage heading into the second frame. The duo each potted another goal in the opening minutes of the second quarter, before Krupnikoff scored twice and Holland added her fifth goal in the waning moments of the half.
After Isabel Bourgeois found the back of the net early in the third quarter, Travisano responded with her first goal of the season, before Cordero and Holland both scored to push the lead to 12-2. Krupnikoff finished off her hat trick with 11:14 to go in the contest and Gomes tallied a pair of scored to seal the victory for the Mariners.
Krupnikoff scooped up a game-high 10 ground balls, while Travisano finished with three caused turnovers. Rachel Palladino added the other goal on the day for Hornets, who managed a total of 13 shots.
Gomes earned her first win of the season in goal, making six saves against eight shots.
Mitchell (1-1 overall) will play next on Saturday, March 18 at home against Castleton University at 2:00 pm.
