MCLA Cruises Past WLAX
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team fell 18-11 on the road Wednesday in a non-conference tilt against the Massachusetts College of Labral Arts at the Joseph Zavattaro Athletic Complex.
Daniella Holland (Nanuet, N.Y.) paced the Mariners with four goals and one assist, giving the senior a team best 10 goals and 12 points on the season.
Lauren Cordero (Selden, N.Y.) tallied her second career hat trick for the Mariners, scoring unassisted in the third quarter and twice in the fourth, once unassisted and the second on an assist from Jessica Krupnikoff (Farmington, Conn.). Mariah Travisano (Putnam, Conn.) added two goals for Mitchell, while Rachel Ricciuti(East Northport, N.Y.)and Krupnikoff each potted a goal for the losing squad.
MCLA jumped out to an early 5-1 lead behind a pair of first quarter goals by Summer Nichols. Nichols found the back of the net twice more in the second frame, powering the Trailblazers to a 12-4 advantage at the break. Krupnikoff scored off an assist from Daniella Holland to kick start the third quarter, but Julia Graham answered a minute later with a goal for MCLA.
The Mariners matched the Trailblazers 3-3 in the third frame and outscored them 4-3 in the final stanza with Ricciuti, Cordero, and Travisano notching goals down the stretch. The deficit was unfortunately too much to overcome for Mitchell, who outshot MCLA 31-27. The Mariners also won the ground ball battle 34-23, forced 25 turnovers, and were 14-19 in clear attempts.
Travisano and Cordero both scooped up seven ground balls to lead Mitchell, while Travisano and Ricciuti caused three turnovers apiece. Hannah Gomes (Groton, Conn.) made played the entire game in the cage and made seven saves.
The Mariners (1-3 overall) will return to action on Friday, March 24, when they travel to play Rhode Island College.
