WLAX Grabs First NECC Win vs. Dean

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College claimed its first New England Collegiate Conference victory of the season by a 20-5 final over Dean College on Tuesday afternoon in a women's lacrosse showdown at Alumni Field.

Kate McCormack led all scorers with six goals and four assists as the Mariners improved to 2-8 overall (1-4 NECC). Hannah Corrigan added a career-high six tallies while Daniella Holland contributed five. Lindsey Fairbank finished with a pair of scores while Breanna Gagnon netted her first career goal, and Francesca Pinard chipped in a game-high five assists.

Lauryn Wilks paced the Bulldogs with three goals while Genesis Johnson and Jordyn McKenney each added scores. Dean dropped to 0-12 overall (0-4 NECC).

The game was tight early as the teams traded blows over the first five minutes. Johnson put the visitors on top with a tally just over a minute into the contest, although Holland notched her first goal of the day seconds later to tie the score. After Mitchell went up behind back-to-back scores by McCormack and Corrigan, Wilks responded with a pair of goals to tie the game at 3-3 with 25:01 to go in the half.

McCormack scored the next two goals and Mitchell never trailed again. After McKenney closed the gap to 5-4 at the 21:33 mark, the Mariners scored nine of the final 10 goals of the half to take a commanding 14-5 lead by intermission. McCormack and Corrigan scored five goals apiece in the stanza to lead the assault.

Mitchell kept Dean off the scoreboard in the second half while adding six more goals for the final tally. Holland recorded a pair of scores in the half while Gagnon closed out the game with a goal off an assist from Corrigan.

Goalie Gillian MacLellan was solid for the Mariners and finished with 11 saves against 23 shots. Jamaya Cleveland faced a total of 54 shots on the day and made 14 saves.

Mitchell will wrap up the regular season at Southern Vermont College on Saturday, April 27 at 2:30 p.m. Dean returns to action at home against Becker College on Thursday, April 25 at 3 p.m.
