Becker Tops WLAX Behind Late First-Half Flurry
NEW LONDON, Conn. – A late first-half surge propelled Becker College to a 21-7 victory over Mitchell College on Tuesday afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference women's lacrosse showdown at Alumni Field.
Tatum Fahs scored a game-high five goals and added four assists to lead the Hawks (8-8 overall, 5-1 NECC) while Kailee Ruyack, Rachel Welling and Victoria Belcher all added four goals apiece. Tiana Fillmore and Ashley Murtha paced the Mariners (0-9 overall, 0-5 NECC) with two goals each.
Mitchell kept it close for the opening 20 minutes of the contest. Ruyack and Welling gave Becker a 2-0 lead in the first 3:13 of the game, but Murtha quickly answered back to cut the deficit in half. The teams traded scores over the next several minutes, though the Mariners were never able to grab the lead.
Later in the half, Mitchell trailed by three until a tally from Fillmore made it a 6-4 game with 5:17 remaining in the stanza. However, the Hawks dominated the final 4:20 and outscored the Mariners by an 8-1 margin to take a 14-5 lead into the break. Belcher scored three times during the stretch while Welling added a pair of goals.
Becker kept the offense going in the second half as Welling won the opening draw and went straight in for the score. Fahs netted three goals in the stanza as the Hawks opened up their largest lead at 19-5 with 16:10 to go.
Mitchell goalie Taylor Dansereau faced 45 shots and finished with 12 saves. Karena Prescott turned away five shots between the pipes for Becker and improved to 8-5 in the cage.
Mitchell will next play at Regis College on Thursday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. Becker returns to action at home against Elms College on Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m.
