WLAX Bounces Back for Win at DWC

NASHUA, N.H. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team came away with a 10-8 victory over Daniel Webster College on Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field.
Despite playing shorthanded, the host Eagles gave the Mariners fits all game, climbing out of a 5-1 first-half hole to eventually take a 7-6 lead. However, the Mariners came back with a late flurry to pick up their third win of the season.
Ashley Murtha continued her torrid scoring pace with a game-best seven goals, pushing to her to a remarkable 74 on the season in just nine games. Callie Santo Salvo added two scores and Allina Duncan scored once to round out the Mitchell offense.
Madeline Roulier notched three goals to reach 60 for her career and added an assist for the Eagles (2-7, 1-6 NECC), who have been hobbled by injuries of late. Amanda Hem added three scores while Rose Brown and Mckenzie Stone added solo strikes.
Diamond Majett made 11 saves for DWC. Gillian MacLellan stopped six shots for the Mariners.
Mitchell looked to be on the path to a rout after Murtha scored three times in the opening eight minutes. Roulier put the Eagles on the board just inside the 10-minute mark, but Murtha and Santo Salvo answered in the 13th and 17th minutes to make it a 5-1 game.
DWC rallied in the closing 10 minutes of the period with Hem making it 5-2 at the 9:17 mark, Roulier making it 5-3 exactly six minutes later and Stone cutting it to one with 46 seconds to go before the break.
Santo Salvo made it 6-4 just 4:29 into the second, but the Eagles surged again and rattled off three straight. Brown barreled in five minutes later to make it 6-5, Hem tied it with 19:30 left on a free position attempt and then gave DWC its first lead by converting again at the free position one minute later.
Murtha answered with another hat trick, tying things at seven with 16:54 to go, then putting the Mariners back ahead 37 second later. She then upped the margin to 9-7 with 6:41 remaining.
Roulier pulled the Eagles back to 9-8 with 2:34 to go but the hosts couldn't grab the equalizer, and Duncan iced it in the closing seconds. The goal was the first of her collegiate career.
Mitchell (3-6 overall, 2-5 NECC) will next play at Southern Vermont College on Thursday, April 27 at 4 p.m.
