
WLAX Picks Up First Win
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team posted its first win of the season on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Dean College by a 20-6 final in non-conference action at Alumni Field.
Ashley Murtha scored a season-high 10 goals and added three assists to lead the Mariners. Kate McCormack added a career-high eight goals while Willeen Pun netted a pair as Mitchell outshot Dean 33-18 in the contest. Gillian MacLellan made nine saves in goal to post her first collegiate win.
Kim Dickson paced Dean with two goals and an assist while goalie Madison-Bailey Felton stopped nine shots.
Mitchell took control early, opening up a 10-0 lead in the first 11:26 of the contest. McCormack accounted for half of the scoring while Murtha had three goals and Pun added two.
Dean fought back with four straight goals, the first of which came from Dickson with 14:48 to play in the half. She then assisted on a score by Briana Saunders, and goals by Madeline LeBeau and Liseta Botelho cut the deficit to 10-4.
The Mariners scored the final five goals of the half to lead 15-4 at intermission. Murtha provided three scores in the final 7:44 of the stanza while McCormack tacked on two.
Murtha added four goals in the second half—all on unassisted efforts—to finish with 10 or more goals in a game for the fifth time in her career. She also snagged a game-high 11 draw controls.
Mitchell (1-2 overall) will next play at Southern Vermont College on Saturday, April 1 at 1 p.m. Dean (0-8 overall) returns to action at home against Daniel Webster College on Saturday at noon.
