Western Connecticut Streaks Past Volleyball
DANBURY, Conn. -- The Mitchell College women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback on Monday evening in a non-conference game against Western Connecticut State University at Feldman Arena.
The Wolves won by sets of 25-20, 25-15, and 25-16 to improve their record to 5-7 overall. Anna Cascapera led all players with 14 kills and also added three digs. Abi Debes added a match-high 18 digs for Western Connecticut, and Rory McMaster handed out 41 assists, also a game-high. Molly Steel-Miller paced the Mariners with eight kills, while Olivia DeLoach, Allison Blum, and Sarah Aviles each tallied three kills. DeLoach and freshman libero Julia Lent led Mitchell with eight digs apiece, and Claire Binfield registered 18 assists.
After trailing for the majority of the first set, the visiting Mariners found the score tied 17-17 after a service error by the Wolves. Western Connecticut answered however, pulling back ahead and scoring the final three points of the set down the stretch to take the opener.
WestConn went up 5-1 to begin the second set and maintained their advantage start to finish.
The third game began much closer, and Mitchell's resolve was on display. The host team again found the path to victory, icing the set with four straight kills.
The Mariners (6-5 overall) have now dropped three in a row following a three game winning streak. Mitchell will return home on Wednesday evening for another non-conference showdown with Regis College at 7:00 pm.
