Volleyball Drops Pair of 3-1 Finals
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of 3-1 decisions on Saturday afternoon in a tri-match with Emmanuel College and Albertus Magnus College.
Match 1 - Emmanuel 3, Mitchell 1
Emmanuel defeated Mitchell by a 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-20) final in a non-conference battle. Emmanuel was led by Sarah Colby with 11 kills while Danielle Rose added 10.
After Mitchell won the opening set 25-22, the Saints battled back and won three straight sets for the match victory. The Saints registered three sets with 10 or more kills and struggled in the fourth set with nine hitting miscues, despite being able to earn the victory.
Mitchell junior Nicole Terni dished out 27 assists for the Mariners and added 12 digs and three service aces.
Emmanuel's Shannon Dudley registered 24 assists in the match with 16 digs. Yun-Ting Lee had a team-high 18 digs for the Saints, while Cara Callahan added 16.
In the first three sets, Emmanuel trailed early but overcame the deficits in the second and third sets to earn the victory. In the fourth and final set, the Saints led the whole way.
In the second set, the Saints went on a 10-0 run after being down 16-10 to the Mariners. Callahan, who came off the bench for the Saints, registered nine straight serves to lead the Saints during the stretch.
Match 2 - Albertus Magnus 3, Mitchell 1
In the final contest the day, the host Falcons (6-6 overall) defeated Mitchell (2-7 overall) by a score of 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 24-26, 25-14). Both teams were coming off tough losses against Emmanuel and were looking to bounce back. Melissa Manning played an outstanding match and led the Falcons to victory with her game-high 12 kills.
Kills were the key for the Falcons in the match, especially in the first set where they managed a team total of 11. Jenna Dececchi was a new addition to the Falcons' starting lineup and made her presence felt early with a kill that gave the Falcons a 4-2 lead in the set. Albertus Magnus never looked back, winning the set 25-19, with match point coming on a powerful kill by Nicole Acerra.
The Falcons carried their strong play into the second set and jumped out to an early 10-5 lead. Mitchell called a timeout to try and shift the momentum, but Dececchi later served an ace to extend the Falcons' lead to 11-5. Following the ace, the Mariners fired back with a run of their own, closing the deficit to one at 14-13. Head coach Omar Ramirez countered with a timeout of his own, one that would swing momentum back in the Falcons' favor. Following the timeout the Falcons went on an 8-0 run to go up 23-13 en route to the set victory.
Up two sets to none, the Falcons hit a rough patch in the third set as they surrendered an 18-15 lead late in the frame after a 7-0 Mitchell run. The Mariners managed 14 third set kills in the 26-24 win, extending the match to a fourth.
Albertus Magnus rebounded to take control of the fourth set and ultimately the match. Another kill by Melissa Manning capped off an 8-0 run and gave the Falcons a 19-13 lead. The match concluded on a service ace by Manning that gave the Falcons a 25-14 fourth-set win and a 3-1 match victory.
Krista LaBissoniere tied Mitchell's Terni for the game high in assists with 28. Kelsey Pendagast also played a key role by contributing eight kills to the Falcons' team total of 36.
Senior Arianna Thomas led the Mariners with 10 kills and added a match-high 26 digs. Freshman Amanda Garcia also contributed seven kills and three blocks while junior Gloria Charles had eight kills.
Mitchell returns to action at home against Curry College on Monday, September 24 at 6 p.m.
