
Women's Volleyball Sweeps Albertus Magnus 3-0
New London, Conn. The Mitchell College women's volleyball team took down Albertus Magnus College with a clean 3-0 sweep on Thursday night, in a non-conference contest at the Yarnall Athletic Center on the campus of Mitchell College.
The Mitchell offensive attack was spearheaded by junior Myia Williams who led the Mariners with eight kills. Senior captain Amanda Rowan was close behind adding seven kills for the Mariners, while junior Janelle Rice had a game-high 20 assists to go along with two service aces.
On the defensive side of the game sophomore libero Colby Zitoli had a game-high 15 digs, while the Falcons Ashley David led the team with 11 digs respectively. Junior Italia Krick and Williams each picked up seven digs apiece for the Mariners, while Falcons freshman Jesselle Guzman chipped in with eight digs herself.
Falcons junior Ana Gomez had a game-high 10 kills to go along with six digs and a block solo. Amber Cohens and David chipped in with four kills and three kills to help on the offensive end for the Falcons. Junior Marielis Muriel led the Falcons with 17 assists and three service aces which was also a game high.
In the first set of the night the Mariners were clinging to a one-point lead until Rice stepped up to serve and helped the Mariners close out the Falcons after five straight points that included two service aces. In the beginning of the second set the Falcons jumped out to a 9-3 advantage led by Muriel, who served the Falcons to six consecutive points with three service aces scattered in. Mitchell countered with four points won with Williams serving and three more immediately followed by Megan Elphick which tied the score at 12 and helped pace the Mariners to a second set victory.
In the final set the Mariners had their most kills (9) and fewest errors (4) in any set of the night.
Mitchell will be back in action on Tuesday, September 27 as it hosts Trinity College at the Yarnall Athletic Center for a 7:00 p.m
