NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Mitchell College women's volleyball team closed out their regular season by winning both games of a double-header against Lesley University on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
The Mariners took the first game by a score of 3-0, winning by set scores of 25-7, 25-9, and 25-8. Mitchell was then victorious the second game, also by a 3-0 final, with set scores of 25-8, 25-3, and 25-1.
Lexy Hanes, Sarah Aviles, and Bree Rudolph registered five kills apiece in the first game, while Allison Blum had a match-high eight digs, and Sa'Mya Epps handed out 14 assists, also a match-high number. Rudolph also added 11 service aces for the Mariners in the win, which was their first conference victory of the season. Brandy Altidor led the Lynx with two kills and Emma Welch had six digs.
Mitchell continued their dominance in the second game, hitting .372 as a team and allowing just 12 points total across three sets. Rudolph paced the home team with six kills and added five more service aces. Aviles again finished with five kills, while Julianna Repaci had seven digs, and Epps once again reached double figures assists with 13. Epps also was credited with a match high nine service aces and Aviles contribute seven service aces in the effort.
Mitchell wraps up their regular season with a 12-11 overall record (2-4 NECC), doubling the number of wins from a season ago and securing the third-seed in the upcoming New England Collegiate Conference women's volleyball tournament. The Mariners will play at New England College on Thursday, November 2 at 6:00 pm in the semifinal round. Mitchell dropped both meetings with the Pilgrims this season, falling in five sets on the road and 3-1 at home. The winner of that game will advance to the conference championship and play whichever team survives the other semifinal matchup between top-seeded Eastern Nazarene College and fourth-seeded Lesley. The championship game is scheduled to be played on Sunday, November 6 at the highest remaining seed.
