Volleyball Takes First Meeting With Albertus Magnus
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Mitchell College women's volleyball team rallied to a 3-0 victory over Albertus Magnus College on Tuesday night at The Nest.
The Mariners took the first meeting between the two teams this season by final scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-21. Brianna Ley paced a balanced Mitchell offense with five kills while Olivia DeLoach and Ariana Carter each chipped in four. Twelve different players notched a kill on the night for the visitors, who improved to 5-3 overall on the year. DeLoach also served for a match-high nine aces, and Lexi Hubbard handed out 13 assists.
Mitchell dug itself out of a 6-0 hole in the opening set, eventually drawing even at 12-12. The Falcons, however, pulled back in front and built the lead to 19-15, forcing head coach Drew Schaeffer to call a timeout. After the break, the Mariners answered with 10 straight points to end the set, with DeLoach providing five aces during the stretch.
The Mariners jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set and never trailed after that, extending the margin to as many as 10. The trend continued into the final set as Mitchell took the first three points and never looked back. The Falcons pulled within one late in the stanza, but a kill by Lexy Hanes and two AMC attack errors wrapped things up for the Mariners.
Mitchell will next travel to Eastern Nazarene College for its conference opener on Saturday, September 21 at 1 p.m.
