LEICESTER, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team came away with a pair of wins on Saturday in a tri-match at Becker College. The Mariners defeated the host Hawks 3-1 to start the day before battling to five sets with Pratt Institutue for a 3-2 victory.
The two wins lifted Mitchell's record to 3-8 on the season. The Mariners also improved to 1-0 in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Game 1: Mitchell College 3, Becker College 1
Playing in their conference opener, the Mariners took the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-22 to take command of the match. Becker bounced back for a 25-20 win in the third set, but Mitchell put the match away by a 25-22 final in the fourth set.
Mitchell was led by senior Gloria Charles and sophomore Amanda Garcia with 15 kills apiece. Charles also gathered a match-high 14 digs and sophomore setter Nicole Caminiti contributed 29 assists.
Marissa Turner led the Hawks with seven kills. Lauren LaVallee chipped in with 15 assists in a losing effort.
Game 2: Mitchell College 3, Pratt Institute 2
Charles and Garcia carried the Mariners to their second victory of the day when they combined for 45 kills in a marathon match with Pratt. Both Charles (20) and Garcia (25) set career highs for kills. Caminiti shared the wealth with a career-high 47 assists.
The Cannoneers were led by Diana Lezama and Hannah Calderwood with nine kills each. Calderwood also had a six service aces. Alli Houghton finished with 25 assists.
Pratt won the first and third sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-23 while Mitchell answered back in the second and fourth sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-23. In the fifth and final set, the score was close until three straight kills by Garcia gave the Mariners a 13-7 cushion. Garcia later added a kill on match point to give Mitchell a 15-12 victory.
Mitchell returns to action at Pine Manor College on Tuesday, October 1 at 7 p.m.
