
Baseball Soars Past Falcons in GNAC Doubleheader
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team ran their winning streak to a season-high eight games on Saturday afternoon, sweeping a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader over Albertus Magnus in convincing fashion, rolling over the Falcons 15-4 in the opener before a 13-3 rout in game two at Rochford Field.
Junior Kenneth Miller Jr. and sophomore Chas Terni Jr. each belted three home runs across two games for the Mariners, who pounded out 27 hits and 28 runs on the day to remain undefeated in conference play.
The Mariners (11-12, 4-0 GNAC) return to conference play when they host New England College on Sunday, March 30, at 1:00 pm, in a game that was originally scheduled to be played on the road. The Falcons (3-11, 0-4 GNAC) play next at Lasell University in a GNAC clash on Sunday, March 30.
Game 1 – Mitchell 15, Albertus 4
The Falcons got on the board first against Mitchell senior Chris Gibbs (New Britain, Conn.), scoring once in the bottom of the first on an run scoring groundout, before making it a 2-0 lead after Adriel Espada hit an RBI single in the third. The Mariners answered in the fourth, plating two runs on RBI singles by freshman Braiden Alaimo (Enfield, Conn.) and sophomore Chas Terni Jr. (Montville, Conn.).
After Albertus countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, the Mariners broke out with three in the top of the fifth, as sophomore Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.) laced an RBI double to right center, and junior Kenneth Miller Jr. (New London, Conn.) followed that up with his second home run of the spring, a two-run blast to centerfield.
Miller Jr. then led off the top of the seventh with his second homer of the game, before the Mariners erupted an inning later by scoring six runs, highlighted by a pair of two-run doubles by Ficocelli and Terni Jr. Mitchell added three runs in the top of the ninth to cap the scoring, securing their win in the opening game of the Saturday afternoon twin bill.
Kenneth Miller Jr. and Michael Ficocelli had each had two hits and three RBI, with Miller blasting two homers and Ficocelli recording a double. Chas Terni Jr. finished 2-4 with a double and four runs driven in, while freshman Ryan Dennis (Enfield, Conn.) was 3-5 with three runs scored for Mitchell.
Righty Chris Gibbs improved to 3-2 on the season after tossing seven innings of four-run ball, scattering five hits and four walks while striking out seven.
Albert Molina shouldered the loss for the Falcons, surrendering five runs in five and one third innings of work. Adriel Espada had two hits, one RBI, and one run scored in the loss, while Shawn Smith went 1-4 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored.
Game 2 – Mitchell 13, Albertus 3, 7 Innings
The Mariners wasted no time in the second game of the day, pushing four runs across in both the first and second inning, before adding one run in the third and fourth. Mitchell never trailed and built a lead that grew as large as 10-1 after Chas Terni Jr.'s second home run of the day in the top of the fourth.
Terni Jr. finished 3-4 with three home runs, five RBI, and three runs scored, while Kenneth Miller Jr. was 2-4 with his third homer of the day, two RBI, three runs scored, and a walk. Thai-ler Sestokas also drove in a pair of runs, as eight Mariners collected at least one base hit.
Sophomore Joshua Scamman (Rochester, N.H.) got the start and picked up the win, throwing five innings of two-run ball, striking out seven.
Elijah Spataj had a team-high two hits for Albertus, finishing the game 2-2 with one RBI. Riley Corgan was the losing pitcher after allowing all 13 runs in six innings.
