Coast Guard Surges Over Baseball
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team suffered their second straight loss at home on Wednesday afternoon, as the Coast Guard Academy pounded out 18 hits and 18 runs en route to an 18-3 victory over the Mariners in non-conference action at Alumni Field.
Sophomore Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.) went 4-4 with two RBI for Mitchell, while freshman Ryan Dennis (Enfield, Conn.) had the only other hit for the home squad. Junior Nicholas Bracale (East Haven, Conn.) scored twice and fellow junior Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.) drove in one run on an RBI groundout.
Following a pair of scoreless innings, the Bears broke out in a big way by plating eight runs in the top of the third. Making his first collegiate start, freshman Braiden Alaimo (Enfield, Conn.) issued a walk and recorded an out before he was removed from the game in the top of the third. That baserunner ended up coming around to score, as did seven more off senior Jadon Canelli (Northford, Conn.), five of which were earned. Coast Guard then tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning, three in the sixth, four in the seventh, and one in the ninth.
Luke Percifield powered the Bears offense, finishing 3-5, with a home run, five RBI, and three runs scored. Coast Guard used nine pitchers in the game, one in each inning, and John DiMarsico picked up the win after tossing a scoreless second inning.
The Mariners (2-4, 0-0 GNAC) will look to bounce back when they host UMass Boston on Thursday, March 6, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 pm. The Bears (2-0, 0-0 NEWMAC) will resume play over the weekend in Washington, D.C., with a three-game weekend series at Catholic University.
