Softball Swept at Elms in Regular Season Finale
CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Mitchell College softball team wrapped
up the regular season with a pair of losses to Elms College on
Friday afternoon by final scores of 3-2 in eight innings and 8-0 in
six innings.
Elms (15-15 overall, 12-2 NECC) leapfrogged Mitchell into second
place in the standings. The Mariners, who dropped to 20-12 overall
and 12-4 in the NECC, fell from second place to third. Mitchell has
already qualified for 2010 NECC Championship—which begins
next week with quarterfinal games on May 4—but will have to
wait until Sunday to find out who and when it will next face.
Game 1 – Elms 3, Mitchell 2 (8 innings)
With the game tied at 1-1 after seven innings, Mitchell scored a
run in the top of the eighth to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman Tiffany
Person scored the go-ahead run when a passed ball allowed her
to cross the plate from third base.
Elms scratched across two runs in the bottom of the frame to pull
out the win. The first run scored on a sacrifice bunt with runners
at second and third, and the winning run came home on a sacrifice
fly to center field.
Mitchell’s only other run of the game came in the fourth
inning when junior Jen
Bordonaro stole third and scored on a throwing error by the
catcher. The Mariners connected for only three hits in the game but
held a 1-0 lead until the Blazers tied things up with a run in the
sixth.
Sophomore Kristina Torres threw 7.2 innings and gave up
three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out and walking
five. Her record dropped to 9-7 on the season.
Game 2 – Elms 8, Mitchell 0 (6 innings)
Mitchell managed only three more hits but couldn’t put up a
single run as Elms rolled to the victory. Sophomore Shannen Pelletier had two hits while Bordonaro provided
the third.
Sophomore Marissa Thomas gave up eight runs (six earned)
on 16 hits in 5.0 innings. She struck out four without walking a
batter and dropped to 11-5 overall on the season.
