NEW LONDON, Conn. – Johnson & Wales University came away with 4-2 and 8-0 victories in non-conference softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Mitchell College.
Game 1 – Johnson & Wales 4, Mitchell 2
The Wildcats (6-9 overall) scored two runs in the second inning off a Mitchell fielding error and added another in the third on an RBI double by Taylor Cwalinski to go up 3-0. After the Mariners (3-11 overall) cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the third thanks to a wild pitch and throwing error, Johnson & Wales tacked on a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Lauren Lomonaco to cap the scoring.
Alyssa Babineau did the job in the circle for the Wildcats, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six. She improved to 4-3 overall on the season. Mitchell junior Marissa Thomas took the loss and allowed four runs (one earned) on eight hits.
Game 2 – Johnson & Wales 8, Mitchell 0 (5 innings)
After committing four errors in the opener, the Mariners continued to give away outs on the defensive side in the second game. The Wildcats pounded out 11 hits and benefitted from four more Mitchell miscues.
Johnson & Wales scored one run in the first inning on a wild pitch and then plated three in the third on RBI singles by Heather Imperatore, Robyn Ziegler and Amy Fish. The Wildcats also scored a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings with Lomonaco and Ellis Kim each providing RBI singles.
