Softball Splits with Daniel Webster
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball team split a conference doubleheader with Daniel Webster College on Sunday afternoon, winning the first game 11-0 before falling 8-1 in the nightcap.
Junior right-hander Marissa Thomas tossed a two-hit shutout for the Mariners (9-15 overall, 6-4 NECC) in the opener. Daniel Webster's Amanda Wilson earned the win in the second game, allowing one run on five hits in a complete-game performance.
Mitchell will next play at Becker College on Wednesday, April 20 at 3 p.m.
Game One – Mitchell 11, Daniel Webster 0 (5 innings)
Mitchell pushed across 11 runs over the first three innings to take control. The Mariners finished with only four hits in the game but benefitted from seven walks and eight wild pitches. Junior Nikki Hoxie went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored to pace the Mitchell offense.
The Mariners scored runs in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch to grab an early 2-0 lead. They then added five more runs in the second inning to break the game open. Hoxie delivered a two-run single in the frame and junior Stacey Suplicki followed with a single up the middle to drive in another.
The Mariners tacked on four more runs in the third as Daniel Webster struggled in the field, committing three errors to extend the inning. Hoxie picked up her third RBI of the game with a base hit in the inning.
Thomas was solid for the Mariners inside the circle, allowing only two hits over 5.0 innings and never letting a runner advance past second base. She also struck out three and earned her second shutout of the season, improving to 6-6 overall.
Lauren Chesnulevich took the ball for the Eagles and gave up 11 runs (eight earned) on three hits while striking out one and walking seven. Amanda Varricchio and Courtney Brennan each finished with a hit in the contest.
Game Two – Daniel Webster 8, Mitchell 1
Daniel Webster erupted for eight runs on 14 hits to earn a split of the series. All but two starters finished with a hit for the Eagles, and Amy Waller and Melissa Kelly had three hits apiece to lead the way.
Daniel Webster took the lead in the first inning as Brennan got things going with a single up the middle to score two. Wilson then helped her own cause with a two-out RBI single to right field to make it 3-0.
Mitchell plated a run in the home half of the first on a ground out by Suplicki that scored senior Jen Bordonaro from third. The Eagles, however, got the run back in the next inning on a RBI single by TC DiSantis. Waller tacked on another run in the fourth with a double to left that scored Varricchio to put Daniel Webster up 5-1.
The Eagles put the game out of reach with a three-run sixth inning. Varricchio scored on a wild pitch, and DiSantis followed with a ground out to bring in another run. Kelly capped the rally with a RBI single that scored Waller and made it 8-1.
Wilson kept the Mariners off balance at the plate, scattering five hits over 7.0 innings while striking out five. More importantly, she didn't allow a walk and improved to 4-4 overall on the season.
Freshman Tricia Tomaselli made the start for Mitchell and allowed eight runs on 14 hits while striking out and walking three. Her record dropped to 3-9 on the year.
