MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Mitchell College softball team ran into a strong pitching performance to start the 2013 season, falling 12-0 to Swarthmore College on Saturday at the Snowbird Tournament.
Swarthmore's Melissa O'Connor dazzled in the circle, taking a no-hit bid into the sixth inning while striking out 18 batters to set a program record. O'Connor faced only three batters over the minimum and recorded the first 10 outs of the contest via strikeout.
The Swarthmore offense pounded out 13 hits and a dozen runs against the Mariners. The lone Mitchell highlight came in the sixth when freshman Alexandra Blanchette broke up the no-hitter with a line drive single to right field.
The Mariners will next face Norwich University on Sunday, March 10 at 1 p.m.
