Softball Picks Up First Win of the Season vs. Norwich
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Mitchell College softball team picked up its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon by a 4-3 final over Norwich University at the Snowbird Tournament.
Junior Tricia Tomaselli turned in a stellar pitching performance for the Mariners (1-1 overall), allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out three in 7.0 innings. She evened her season record at 1-1.
Mitchell scraped together four runs with timely hitting and smart baserunning. The Mariners had only three hits on the day--two off the bat of freshman Emily Morenzoni--but stole a total of five bases. Both Morenzoni and Ariel Hallisey each had a pair of swipes while freshman Alexandra Blanchette had one.
The Mariners fell behind 2-0 in the second inning but answered right back in the third to tie the game. Hallisey scored the first run on an error by the Norwich catcher, and Morenzoni later tied the game with a RBI single to left.
Mitchell scored two more runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Hallisey scored from third on a squeeze play when Blanchette laid down a sacrifice bunt. A pair of Norwich miscues on the play allowed Blanchette to round the bases as well.
The Cadets cut the deficit in half when Noel Byers led off the sixth with a solo homer to right. However, Tomaselli didn't allow another hit in the game en route to the victory.
Mitchell returns to action at the Snowbird Tournament on Monday, March 11 against Albertus Magnus College (9 a.m.) and Gettysburg College (11 a.m.).
