Game 1
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Mitchell pitcher Brittany Fiederlein tossed a perfect game and gave up only one hit in 10.0 combined innings of work on Wednesday in a doubleheader sweep at Wheelock College.
The sophomore right-hander retired 15 straight batters in the opener as the Mariners won 10-0 in five innings. She then took a perfect game into the fourth inning of the nightcap before losing it on an infield single by Molly Rose. Fiederlein improved to 14-7 on the season and increased her shutouts total to six.
Mitchell will next host Southern Vermont College on Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m. With one victory the Mariners would secure first place in the New England Collegiate Conference standings and the right to host the upcoming NECC Championship.
Game 1 - Mitchell 10, Wheelock 0 (5 innings)
Mitchell staked Fiederlein to a 2-0 in the first inning that was highlighted by a RBI single by Danielle Autieri. The Mariners added another pair of runs in the third on a RBI double by Fiederlein and broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning. Shannon O'Neil delivered a two-run single during the rally, her third hit of the game, as the lead extended to 10-0.
The only drama left was whether Fiederlein would nail down the perfect game. Facing the middle of the Wheelock order, she struck out the side to secure her first collegiate perfect game. She struck out seven of the 15 batters she faced and threw 41 of her 47 total pitches for strikes.
Game 2 - Mitchell 19, Wheelock 0 (5 innings)
Eight of the nine Mitchell starters finished with a hit in the nightcap led by a 5-for-5 effort by Jenny Groman. Groman and Fiederlein each knocked in four runs apiece as the Mariners recorded season highs in hits (19) and runs. Groman belted a pair of doubles and was one of three Mitchell players with a triple along with Fiederlein and Samantha DelConte.
Fiederlein faced only one batter over the minimum and struck out 10.
