Softball's DelConte Earns Weekly NECC, ECAC Honors
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College freshman Samantha DelConte picked up a pair of softball honors on Tuesday.
DelConte picked up her fourth New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week selection of the season, the most by any newcomer in the league in 2015. She was also named Corvias ECAC Division III New England Rookie of the Week by the Eastern College Athletic Conference. It marked the first time she received regional recognition from the ECAC, which selects honorees from all the softball programs in New England.
DelConte batted .200 with a double, RBI and run scored in a pair of NECC Championship games last week. The rookie caught a total of 19.0 innings behind the plate without an error and earned a spot on the NECC All-Tournament Team.
The latest awards capped a strong season for the Mitchell newcomer. DelConte was named to the all-conference first team as a catcher and became the second Mitchell softball player to be selected as NECC Rookie of the Year.
DelConte started and played in all 32 games during the season and hit .374 with 22 runs scored and 14 RBI. She started all 18 NECC contests and batted .483 in league play with seven doubles, two triples and a home run, and she scored 19 runs and drove in 12 while hitting out of the leadoff spot. She was also rock solid behind the plate and didn't commit an error in 131 total chances.
The Mariners finished the season with an overall record of 17-15 under first-year head coach Allison Wigand. Mitchell posted a 16-2 record in NECC play en route to its first regular season title in the seven-year history of the league.
