KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Mitchell College softball team lost games to Beloit College and Coe College on Wednesday morning at the Rebel Spring Games.
The Mariners opened the day with a 19-3 loss to Beloit before suffering a 16-0 setback against Coe. Shannon O'Neil continued a strong start to the season by going 4-for-5 with a double on the day to lead the Mitchell offense.
Mitchell (1-7 overall) will wrap up play at the Rebel Games with contests against Thomas More College and Widener University on Thursday, March 10 beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Game 1 – Beloit 19, Mitchell 3
Mitchell surrendered three runs in the top of the first to fall into an early hole. Suzanne Vachon led off the home half of the frame with an infield single and later scored on an error to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Beloit added runs in each of the next three innings to lead 9-1 after four. The Mariners scratched across a run in the fifth on an RBI triple by Vahcon and added another in the sixth courtesy of another Beloit error. However, a 10-run seventh inning by the Buccaneers put the game away and secured their first win of the season.
O'Neil went 3-for-3 in the game while Vachon finished with two hits. Jenny Groman, Jacquelyn White and Tanisha Ruiz also picked up hits in the contest for the Mariners.
Game 2 – Coe 16, Mitchell 0 (5 innings)
Coe pitcher Mariah Fritz tossed a one-hit shutout and struck out four over 5.0 innings. The Kohawks provided her with plenty of support, erupting for 14 runs over the first two innings en route to victory.
O'Neil had the lone hit for the Mariners with a leadoff single in the second. Mitchell put runners on first and second with one out in the frame but Fritz escaped unscathed. She didn't allow another baserunner and retired the final 11 batters she faced.
