Softball Duo Honored by NECC
ATTLEBORO, Mass. – A pair of Mitchell College softball players were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday.
Senior Shannon O'Neil was named NECC Player of the Week while junior Brittany Fiederlein was tabbed NECC Pitcher of the Week. The pair helped the Mariners to a 5-1 week in conference play to close out the regular season.
O'Neil earned the honor for the first time this season and the third time in her career. Fiederlein picked up accolades for the first time this season and sixth time in her career.
O'Neil batted a team-high .722 last week with five doubles, a homer, 11 RBI and nine runs scored. She had multiple hits in five games that included three-hit efforts against Wheelock, Daniel Webster and Southern Vermont Colleges. After a 5-for-6 day against the Wildcats, she went 5-for-6 with three doubles, four runs scored and five RBI in a series sweep over the Eagles. She capped the week by going 3-for-6 with a double, home run, four RBI and four runs scored in a sweep over the Mountaineers.
Fiederlein went 5-0 inside the circle last week with a 0.93 ERA and 37 strikeouts. She picked up a pair of wins against both Daniel Webster and Southern Vermont and also earned a victory over Wheelock. She didn't allow more than two runs in any start and recorded two shutouts, and in six appearances she gave up a total of 18 hits over 30.0 innings of work.
Mitchell (11-21 overall, 10-8 NECC) is the fifth seed in the 2016 NECC Softball Championship and will play a first round game at Regis College on Wednesday, April 27 at 4 p.m.
