Women's Soccer Blanks Wheelock, 7-0
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team
earned a 7-0 conference victory over Wheelock College on "Senior
Day" on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Mariners (6-7-1 overall, 4-1-1 NECC) sent their three seniors
off in style, scoring a season-high seven goals while holding a
commanding 38-2 advantage in shots. Senior Paige Ehnot scored a
pair of goals and classmate Marjorie
Oliveira recorded a goal in the final regular season home games
of their careers. Freshman Caley McClendon
and junior Nikki
Hoxie each also found the back of the net twice for the
Mariners.
Ehnot got things started for Mitchell with her first tally of the
season in the 19th minute off a feed from freshman Ashlee Pekar.
McClendon took care of the rest of the scoring in the half, netting
goals within a 21-second span in the 38th minute to put the
Mariners up 3-0 at the break.
Hoxie netted her first goal in the 56th minute on an unassisted
effort and added another in the 67th minute on a penalty kick after
being tripped up inside the box. Ehnot's second goal came in the
61st minute after sophomore Amanda Hernandez
played a ball to her up the left sideline. Oliveira tacked on the
final goal with 48 seconds to play on a ball served to the far post
by junior Leslie Briggs.
Senior goalkeeper Morgan Lindsay
made her first start of the season and did not face a shot on goal.
Freshman Kaylee Woodford
played the final 42 minutes of the contest and also did not face a
shot. Alexandra Chiesa played the entire 90 minutes for the
Wildcats (0-13-0 overall, 0-5-0 NECC) and finished with 14
saves.
Mitchell will next play at Bay Path College on Wednesday, October
27 at 4 p.m.
