
Softball Sweeps Daniel Webster
NASHUA, N.H. – Freshman Meghan
Burke went a combined 4-for-8 with eight RBI and belted a grand
slam and sophomore Nikki Hoxie went 5-for-8 and knocked in six runs
to lead Mitchell College past host Daniel Webster College, 9-0 and
17-3, in a NECC softball doubleheader Monday afternoon at Eagle
Field.

Thomas added complete game victories in the circle as the
Mariners (16-8, 8-0 NECC) remained undefeated in conference play.
Chelsey Crawford led the Eagles (5-12, 0-4 NECC) going 3-for-3 in
the nightcap including a two-run homer.
In the opener, Torres (7-5 overall) tossed a one-hitter while
striking out 10 and walking one. The Mariners broke open a close
2-0 game with four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Hoxie went 4-for-5 and knocked in two runs to pace the offense
while Burke was 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored twice. Sophomore Stacey Suplicki went 3-for-5 and drove in a run in her
first action back after illness.
Kristina Rieger took the loss (3-4 overall) for Daniel Webster.
Amanda Varracchio garnered the Eagles lone hit in the first.
In the nightcap, Mitchell held a 3-1 lead after two but broke the
game open with eight runs – all unearned – in the
third. The Mariners then added six runs more in the fourth in a
game that ended after five innings.
Burke led Mitchell with two hits, including a two-run double in the
third and a grand slam in the fourth. It was the second homer of
the season for Burke, who was tabbed NECC Rookie of the Week
earlier on Monday. Hoxie knocked in four runs including a two-run
single in the third.
Thomas (9-3 overall) allowed three earned runs on seven hits,
striking out six and walking one.
Crawford had a run scoring single in the first and belted her
second of the season with a two-run job in the third. Varricchio
added two hits for DWC. Lauren Chesnulevich took the loss (2-6
overall), allowing 13 runs but just four earned on five hits over
three innings. She also struck out three but walked
eight.
Mitchell will next host Becker College on Wednesday,
April 21 at 3:30 p.m. Prior to the first game, the Mariners
will honor their three seniors in a special ceremony.
