Lesley Downs Women's Tennis 8-1
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Lesley University earned an 8-1 victory over the Mitchell College women's tennis team on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference play at the Mack Tennis Courts.
The Lynx (4-5 overall, 3-3 NECC) took an early 2-1 lead in doubles and went on to win all six singles matches. With the win, Lesley earned a season sweep of Mitchell (0-8, 0-6 NECC) and guaranteed itself of finishing in the top four of the conference standings.
Lesley's top two doubles squads cruised to wins, but the Mitchell duo of Jessey Myers and Veyda McVey forced a tiebreaker at the No. 3 spot. The Mariners won the tiebreaker 9-8 (7-2) to record their lone point, and it was the first victory this season for both Myers and McVey.
From that point on it was all Lesley. The Lynx won five matches in straight sets, led by a strong effort by Carissa Iverson at the No. 1 position. She topped Alexa Litwak by finals of 6-1, 6-1. Lesley's Frances De Leon, Emma True and Meghann Toomajian all lost only one game each while cruising to wins at No. 4, 5 and 6, respectively.
The Mariners fought hard at both No. 2 and 3 singles. Grace Ciampa defeated Samantha Ryan in straight sets at No. 2 but needed a tiebreaker in the second set to hold off a comeback. At the No. 3 position, Victoria Bunker rebounded from a first set loss to top McVey in a third-set 10-point tiebreaker.
Mitchell returns to action at Becker College on Wednesday, October 9 at 3 p.m.
