HARTFORD, Conn. - The Trinity College women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep of the Mitchell College Mariners on Tuesday night at Oosting Gymnasium.
The Bantams, who won by set scores of 25-13, 25-17 and 25-10, improved to 6-4 on the year while the Mariners fell to 0-10 overall. Trinity was led by Hanna Engstrom, Rachel Underwood and Wyllie Boughton who each had eight kills. Boughton was one of three Trinity players to tally three aces, along with Colette Scheffers and Erica Bruni, while Grace Metry led the squad with 12 digs. Rebecca Chu and Ana Hackett split time at the setter position, with Chu leading all players with 23 assists and Hackett finishing with seven.
Mitchell was paced by Italia Krick and Laurissa Amaker, who both had a pair of service aces. Courtney Cappabianca led the Mariners with eight digs.
The Bantams jumped out to a 10-3 advantage in the first set and never looked back, crusing to a 25-13 set victory. After a kill from Ariana Carter made it 11-5, the Bantams rattled off six consecutive points to command a 17-5 lead. A 5-0 run later put the hosts up 22-9 before a Mitchell service error capped off the set in Trinity's favor.
The second set did not start as smoothly for Trinity as Mitchell found itself ahead, 6-5, after an ace from Amaker. Trinity, however, regrouped and rattled off a 7-1 run to take a 12-7 lead. Trailing 14-9, Mitchell fought back with five straight points to even the score at 14-14. The Bantams went on to yield just three more Mariner points in the set, capping it with a kill by Underwood, followed by back-to-back, booming aces from Scheffers.
The third set was never in doubt as Trinity climbed to a 6-1 lead and coasted from there. Up 23-10, Ana DiPrizito sealed the victory with consecutive kills off assists from Hackett to help lift the Bantams to the sweep.
