No. 6 Volleyball Eliminated by No. 3 Becker
LEICESTER, Mass. -- Sixth-seeded Mitchell College saw its season come to an end on Tuesday night, falling 3-0 to third-seeded Becker College in the first round of the 2017 New England Collegiate Conference Women's Volleyball Championship at the Leicester Gymnasium.
The Hawks, who won in straight sets by scores of 26-24, 25-20 and 25-20, advance on to play at second-seeded Lesley University on Friday, November 3 at 8:00 p.m. The Mariners ended the season with an overall record of 2-18.
Becker's Kayla Dupree led all players with 12 kills, three service aces and two solo blocks. Charlene Landry, playing in the final home match of her record-breaking career, had match highs of 25 assists and 17 digs to go along with four service aces. Micaela Rice contributed nine kills with 11 digs while Olivia McGuinness tallied five service aces and 14 digs. Sofia Cullina added 13 digs.
Mitchell was led by Marissa Sweeney with five kills, four aces and 13 digs. Megan Elphick recorded a team-high eight kills with seven digs while Lauren Tompkins had 20 assists and nine digs.
The first set was a nail-biter. The Mariners took a 24-23 lead off Sweeney's serve and appeared headed for an early lead. However, the Hawks rallied with three straight points to close out the set, the latter two points coming off Rice's serve.
In the third set, Becker spotted the visitors a 7-1 lead before a timely timeout righted the ship. The Hawks finally tied it at 10-10 before taking the lead for good.
