Baseball Picks Up First Win over Westminster
FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team picked
up its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon, splitting a
doubleheader against Westminster College (Pa.). The Mariners
dropped the first game 7-0 but rebounded for a 3-2 victory in the
second.
Freshman Garrett Cornwell gave the Mariners a stellar
performance on the mound in the win. The right-hander threw a
complete game in his collegiate debut, allowing only two runs on
six hits while striking out six and walking three.
Mitchell (1-4 overall) fell behind 1-0 after the first inning but
scored twice in the third to take the lead. Junior John
McGarry plated both runs in the frame with a triple.
Westminster (3-6 overall) scratched across a run in the sixth to
tie the game at 2-2. Senior Andrew
Langlais led off the bottom of the sixth with a double for
the Mariners, and classmate Jared
Bishop followed with a pinch-hit double down the right field
line to drive in the go-ahead run.
In the day’s first game, starter Cody
Faddis pitched six innings and struck out four while giving up
seven runs on seven hits. The Mitchell offense was held to just
five hits in the game. Junior Paul
Martinez led the Mariners with a double and also stole a
base.
Mitchell will wrap up its spring trip on Monday, March 15 with a
doubleheader against Manhattanville College.
