Santiago Named to FCBL All-Star Roster
NEW LONDON, Conn. - Mitchell College senior Eddie Santiago was recognized by the Future Collegiate Baseball League last week, as the league announced its selections for the 2017 FCBL All-Star Game.
Santiago, who is playing summer ball for the FCBL's Wachusett Dirt Dawgs, was one of 10 pitchers selected to represent the West squad. The 2017 FCBL All-Star Game will be held at Muzzy Field in Bristol, Conn. on Tuesday, July 18.
Santiago began the summer in Wachusett's bullpen but has successfully made the switch to the starting rotation. Since the change in late June, the Mitchell southpaw has lowered his ERA from 2.79 to 2.13. In 25.1 innings this season, Santiago has a 3-1 record with one save and 23 strikeouts to just six walks. Over his last four outings, he is 2-0 with a 1.78 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 15.2 innings of work.
"It's an honor, especially competing at a high level like this," said Santiago. "Coming from a small Division III school, I don't think anyone expected me to do as well as I have. The competition here is great -- I'm facing guys from schools like Vanderbilt, Oklahoma, LSU and UConn. It's been a great experience."
With the Mariners this past spring, Santiago was an all-conference second team selection who made 13 appearances and went 6-1 with two saves and a 3.73 ERA. His 65 strikeouts were the most on the Mitchell staff and ranked fifth all-time in the school's single season record book. He also held opposing lineups to a .227 batting average in 60.1 innings of work.
