Anchorwomen Surge Past Softball in Mitchell Home Opener
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College softball were swept in their home opening doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, suffering a pair of non-conference losses to Rhode Island College, 13-0 in the opener and then by a 10-2 final in the second game.
Both games were shortened to five innings due to the run rule, as the Anchorwomen pitching held the Mariners to just three combined hits on the day.
The Mariners (3-9, 0-0 GNAC) will return to action on the road Saturday, March 23rd, with a non-conference doubleheader at Roger Williams University. Rhode Island College (6-2, 0-0 LEC) have now won four straight games and will look to stay hot when they play next on Saturday, March 23rd, at Johnson & Wales University.
Game 1 – RIC 13, Mitchell 0
Rhode Island College junior Abby Kid got the start in the circle and did not allow a hit and struck out 10 to improve her record to 4-0 on the senior. Junior right fielder Abby Clesas powered the potent Anchorwomen attack, finishing 3-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while RIC pounded out 16 hits off Mitchell pitching.
Six runs came across to score in the top of the first inning, and after RIC plated one more on a passed ball in the second, the visiting squad pushed two more across in the third, fourth, and fifth.
Senior pitcher Katelyn Lipsky (Planstville, Conn.) was charged with the loss for the Mariners, surrendering 10 earned runs across three and one third innings of work, before being relieved by fellow senior Hailey Hill (Griswold, Conn.). Hill allowed six hits and three runs in her one and two third innings in the circle.
First year players Brooke Clancy (East Haven, Conn.) and Haley Westfal (La Habra, Cali.) were the lone baserunners for Mitchell, each working a walk.
Game 2 – RIC 10, Mitchell 2
The Anchorwomen kept up the momentum in the second game of the twin bill and wasted no time jumping ahead, as Katelyn Ashe and Reilly Austin each picked up RBI singles. A three-run home run off the bat of Avery Katz pushed the visitor's lead to five runs in the second inning, before a three-run fifth inning by the Anchorwomen ended the contest early via the eight-run rule. Katz finished the day 3-4 with four RBI and three runs scored.
Both runs for the Mariners came in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Brooke Clancy singled through the left side, scoring Westfal and junior Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME). Landry finished 1-3 with a run scored, while Clancy went 1-2 with two RBI, and senior Jenna Bennett (Shelton, Conn.) added a base hit.
Taylor Babcock picked up her second win of the season for RIC after allowing just two earned runs and three hits in four and one third innings. Mitchell junior pitcher Emily Reynolds (Somers, Conn.) dropped to a 1-5 after giving up 10 earned runs in five innings.
