Coast Guard Knocks Off Baseball


NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College baseball team dropped a 17-4 final at the Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

Mike Massaro and Eddie Kalankiewicz each were 4 for 5 with five RBIs as the host Bears scored 15 unanswered runs to win the non-conference game between the two New London schools. Massaro had three doubles, a triple and three runs scored while Kalankiewicz had a double and three stolen bases. Coast Guard improved to 9-5 on the season by scoring a season-high 17 runs on a season-high 17 hits.

Mitchell (6-3 overall) led 3-0 after scoring three runs in the top of the first with sophomore Osmer Collado having the big hit, a two-run single. The Mariners led 4-2 before the Bears took the lead for good with four runs in the fourth. Massaro tied the game with a RBI double before Kalankiewicz's two-run double gave Coast Guard the lead at 6-4.

The Bears put the game away with eight runs in the sixth sending 14 batters to the plate. Massaro had a leadoff double and a three-run triple in the inning while Kalankiewicz had a pair of RBI singles. Tyler Babkiewich had a two-run single while Joe Petry added a RBI single in the eight run outburst for a 15-4 lead.

Babkiewich had a RBI triple in the seventh while Mike Salerno had a RBI single to score Babkiewich and close the scoring. Babkiewich had two hits and four RBI while Graham Sherman and Petry each had two hits and a RBI in the win for Coast Guard. John Jackson, on exchange from Navy, had the first hit of his career in just his second career at bat for the Bears.

Collado had three hits and two RBI while junior Felix Colarte had three hits and a RBI for Mitchell. Freshman Anthony Santiago and senior Carlos Hughes each added two hits for the Mariners, who finished with 12 hits.

Nate Toll improved to 3-1 on the season as he pitched the first five innings and scattered nine hits while allowing four earns, all earned. He walked three and struck out two. Nick Peters, making his first appearance of the season, pitched the final four innings and allowed just three hits and struck out three to pick up the first save of his career.

Sophomore Kevin Carbon (0-1 overall) took the loss for Mitchell. Carbon started and went 3.1 innings while allowing seven hits and six earned runs.
