NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a doubleheader sweep of Lesley University on Friday afternoon, winning by final scores of 10-0 and 17-3.

The Mariners (17-5-1 overall, 12-2 NECC) were led offensively by senior Jeff Perillo and junior John Apostolo. Perillo reached base safely in all nine plate appearances on the day, going 5-for-5 with two doubles, a homer, four walks, four RBI and six runs scored. Apostolo went 5-for-7 with a double, homer, seven RBI and five runs scored.

The final game of the three-game series between Mitchell and Lesley (0-22 overall, 0-12 NECC)—originally scheduled for Saturday at noon—has been postponed due to the threat of rain. A make-up date has yet to be set.

Game 1 – Mitchell 10, Lesley 0

Senior right-hander Paul Martinez tossed his first career shutout in the opener, allowing only two hits over 7.0 innings to improve to 5-1 on the season. He also struck out a career-high nine batters.

The Mariners supplied Martinez with the only run he would need in the first inning on a sacrifice fly to right field by Apostolo that brought home Perillo. Mitchell tacked on two more runs in the third to go up 3-0. Apostolo singled to drive in Perillo once again and later scored while junior Felix Colarte was hung up in a rundown between first and second base.

Mitchell broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning. After senior John McGarry plated the first run with a ground out to first, Perillo and Apostolo each followed with two-run homers to center field to make it 8-0. Perillo's homer was his third of the season while Apostolo increased his league–leading total to seven.

Senior Carlos Hughes provided the final runs of the game with a two-run homer to left field in the sixth. It was his third long ball of the season, all of which have come during conference play.

Martinez pitched around three walks and four hit batters in the contest, working out of jams in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Lesley stranded a total of four runners in scoring position during the span.

Ryan Genua and Peter Plansky each doubled in the game for the Lynx. Starting pitcher Jeff Landry gave up 11 runs (10 earned) on 11 hits in 5.0 innings. He struck out three and walked two and dropped to 0-4 on the season.

Game 2 – Mitchell 17, Lesley 3

Mitchell exploded for 16 runs over the first two innings to take complete control in the second game. The Mariners finished with 17 hits in the contest, including five for extra bases.

The Mariners batted around in the first inning and plated four runs. Apostolo and Martinez each delivered RBI singles in the frame while Colarte drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Mitchell sent 15 batters to the plate in the second inning and scored 12 runs on 11 hits. Apostolo had a RBI single and RBI double in the frame while sophomore Osmer Collado contributed with a RBI single and a three-run homer. Both Perillo and Colarte also drove in a pair of runs as the Mariners took a 16-0 lead by the end of the inning.

Apostolo (7-1 overall), who got the start on the hill for the Mariners, allowed only one hit and struck out eight in 5.0 innings of work. He exited the game with a 17-0 lead and turned things over to Perillo prior to the sixth.

Lesley rallied for three runs in the sixth to get on the scoreboard. Noah Shaw and Joseph Santos each came up with the bases loaded and delivered RBI singles. Landry also plated a run by drawing a walk with the sacks packed.

Greg Anglin made the start for the Lynx and allowed 10 runs on nine hits in 1.2 innings. He dropped to 0-5 overall on the season. Joseph Marcinko threw 4.1 innings of relief and gave up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits.
